Lydia Snow
Richard Rodgers and Lorenze Hart, prolific composers of such great songs as “My Funny Valentine”, “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered”, “Blue Moon” and “Falling In Love with Love” and such musicals as “Pal Joey”.
Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden and Adolf Green. Bernstein was the youngest conductor of the NY Philharmonic. He wrote the music, with Comden & Green (lyrics), for the film “On the Town”. He also wrote the musical score for “West Side Story”, with lyrics by Steven Sondheim. Comden & Green were prolific songwriters who penned the musical “Bells are Ringing”, which they wrote specifically for Judy Holiday.
Cole Porter wrote both the words and the music, something few could do, for some of the most lasting standards in our musical history, like “I’ve Got you Under My Skin”, “I Love Paris”, “Begin the Beguine”. He also wrote the music for the film “Kiss Me Kate” and more.
Dorthy Fields (my hero), was one of the few female lyricists of the 20’s and 30’s and wrote at least 400 popular songs for musicals. She and her brother wrote the libretto for “Annie Get Your Gun”. Her first song, for which she got paid, was “I Can’t Buy You Anything But Love”, which she wrote with Jimmy McHugh. Together they gifted us with such songs as “I’m In the Mood For Love”, “On the Sunny Side of the Street”, “Exactly Like You” (which Aretha Franklin performed, among many others) and more.
George and Ira Gershwin are perhaps the greatest of the greats. George was a genius who died at the prime of his career, age 38. I can’t even fathom what great works George could have gone on to produce had he not been struck down so early in life. He composed “Rapsody in Blue”, “An American In Paris” and “Concerto in F”. I highly recommend that if you have not listened to the first two pieces of brilliance, that you do so as quickly as possible. Together with Ira, not only did they compose the opera “Porgy & Bess”, and the musical “Funny Face”, my personal favorite with Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn, but they composed some of the most lasting standards in our musical canon, such as “Summertime” (from Porgy), “Embraceable You”, “But Not For Me”, “’S Wonderful”.

Harold Arlen, whose father wanted him to be a cantor, said no. And thankfully so, as he wrote the music to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. Arlen wrote many songs with Johnny Mercer, including “Blues In the Night”. Arlen composed over 500 songs, including “Stormy Weather”, “It’s Only A Paper Moon”, “Let’s Fall In Love”.
Johnny Mercer, one of the most prolific lyricists in history, having written over 1500 songs and won the Oscar Award for 4 of them, among those, “Moon River”, “Days of Wine & Roses”. His songbook includes such masters as “Autumn Leaves”, “Come Rain of Come Shine”, “I Remember You”, “Drinking Again” (Bette Midler did a great rendition of this one) and “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive”.
